"Mud" is the latest, below the radar hit.  In fact, it might be the best movie I've seen in 2013.  Matthew McConaughey stars in this smart film based in a small Arkansas town.  Spoiler alert for the gals, McConaughey keeps his shirt on for the first 90 minutes of the movie.  But he does take it off for a pivotal scene near the end.  Wink.

McConaughey plays Mud, a man on the run from law enforcement and bounty hunters.  He hides out on an island near his boyhood town.  Two 14 year old boys stumble upon him (think Stand By Me,) and they soon begin to help him elude those chasing him.  McConaughey and the two are excellent in this fast paced thriller.  Reece Witherspoon plays a love interest but even she can't ruin this movie.

I assume McConaughey doesn't get a lot of respect from the Academy for much of his work, but he should for "Mud."  And although he's playing a character that suits him quite well, he does it seamlessly.  And there's something to be said for that.

I highly recommend this movie.  I also highly recommend going to the bathroom before it starts.  It's long.  Almost two and half hours.
